"Books are the perfect entertainment: no commercials, no batteries, hours of enjoyment for every dollar spent. What I wonder is why everybody doesn't carry a book around for those inevitable dead spots in life."~~~Stephen King

Losing our elders

I'm getting around this morning to go to my uncle's funeral. It's so hard for me to lose my elderly loved ones. I have so many good memories of all of them, and most all of them are gone.

My mom is taking her brother's death so hard and has been depressed. Out of a family of 10 children, only two remain: my mom and one other uncle. I remember reunions of all the family getting together when I was a child. Back then they were held at my aunt's farm. Such wonderful memories. Later years they were held at Big Creek Park, which was a lovely place too. My cousins and I would go off and explore the trails and have a great time! Something else I enjoyed: the good food! My family can cook!

I have such fond memories of my uncle. He and my dad always sang and played their guitars at the family reunions. My uncle is known for singing Cool Clear Water. He and my aunt enjoyed running their campground for many years, and had visitors, both old and new, that would come every year. They'd have their "sings" during the summer and friends would enjoy good blue grass and country music. The past several years my uncle and aunt hosted the family reunions at their campground.

It's going to be a sad day for family. My uncle touched so many lives and will be missed by many. Today we will also be celebrating his life.
