New England Vacation

I've been aiming to update my blog now for a few weeks, but the time factor has not allowed me to do so! I decided to take time today. So I'm enjoying my cups of coffee in my new Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream mug from Waterbury, Vermont. My sweet little cat Holly Noel is nestled in my warm lap. Even though she makes typing difficult, I won't dare make her get down! My husband, Brian, and I immensely enjoyed our vacation. We traveled from the beautiful Atlantic coast of Maine, across the White Mountains in New Hampshire, to the Green Mountains (which are part of the Appalachian Mountains) in northern Vermont, and tried to hit a lot of beautiful rural country inbetween. We always take off and drive the unchartered back roads. This is the best and only way to travel, and find treasures! This trip was more or less an overview of three states. We'll know more of the area we'll want to concentrate on the next trip to New England. We'll definitely fly out the next time instead of driving, and then rent a car!! In the future, I'd like to see more of the coastal towns of Maine. We experienced some heavy rain one day, and also had some drizzly mist on others. We were fortunate to have a nice sunny day when we visited Acadia National Park on the coast of Maine. My friends have asked me what part of our vacation we enjoyed the most. That's really a tough one to answer! I loved the feel of the coast: the harbors, the salty smell of the ocean, lighthouses, ships, watching the fishermen bring in their fish and lobster, the quaint towns, visiting with locals, eating at their favorite restaurants. That's something I always try to do on vacations...ask the locals their favorite places to eat, and they're always happy to oblige! I loved New Hampshire and Vermont too. The mountains, lakes, mountain streams, the historic towns, covered bridges, mills, water falls, the people. I think that one of the pasttimes I enjoyed the most was photographing the countryside. If I'd had at least a month or two to be in New England, I would have stopped around every curve of the road to photograph something that caught my eye. But, unfortunately, on this trip we were on a schedule...which neither of us prefer, but we had decided it would be best with the autumn color tours. I took approximately 1,200 photos. In northern Vermont the colors were in peak color. The maples, aspens, birches, mountain ashes, sumacs were absolutely...well there's no words to describe the beauty that God has created. We have beautiful color in my home state of Illinois, but the trees are are not set against the beauty of mountain ranges, lakes and streams. I've always seen photographs of Vermont, with my perception of what Vermont's symbol  is: the white church steeple. I saw white church steeples in all of New England. Such a beautiful sight to behold. I talked with a gentleman in Maine about this since I also saw so many steeples in Maine. He told me that Vermont just gets the steeples advertisement! Just like Vermont maple syrup. It's also made in New Hampshire and
Maine! Vermont just gets it advertised! As you can see in the menu, you are charged more for the real stuff! I could go on and on, but have decided this is a good place to stop writing. Our last day was bittersweet, longing for home, but knowing that our vacation was over. Until next vacation...
