Main title song from the 1943 version of Jane Eyre
movies that you can watch again and again. Orson Welles nobly plays the role of Edward Rochester. I got the distinct impression, or at least from what I've read about Mr. Welles, that he was actually playing himself, not just the part of Mr. Rochester. Joan Fontaine was a perfect choice to play Jane. She plays the epitome of "meek". I like Ms. Fontaine as an actress, though I wouldn't consider her as one of my top favorites. Ms. Fontaine also played the parts very well in Rebecca and Suspicion. I feel the same about her sister, Olivia deHavilland, though she was very good in the Snake Pit. Peggy Ann Garner was the perfect choice to play young Jane. Agnes Moorehead plays the ideal tyrannical aunt, who abandons her to the hands of Henry Daniell as Mr. Brocklehurst, the evil headmaster of Lowood Institution. Finally, there's Margaret O'Brien as Adelle, perhaps the most charming child actress of all time. O'Brien steals every scene she's in. Whenever I see young Ms. O'Brien's name on a movie's billing, I automatically record the movie, if not for any other reason, just to watch her. She was adorable and wonderful in Meet Me in St. Louis and The Secret Garden.
